Live albums are best served raw and rough. Concert films tend to deliver the goods with slick edits in the moment. And toddlers never, ever stop moving. After slugging it out as a working punk rock band over 15 years and 5 studio albums The Dollyrots decided now is the time to combine all three. Counting on fans to crowdfund a PledgeMusic project for a live CD/DVD while taking their 18 month old son River on the road, the band is set to release The Dollyrots Family Vacation: Live in the Los Angeles! January 29, 2016 as both a concert film & companion live album.
During a Summer 2015 American tour with friends Bowling For Soup The Dollyrots filmed their experience and have offered it to fans as an exclusive series of tour videos and memorabilia. The result is 40 minutes of rock frenzy directed by filmmaker Ian MacLeod and delivered as both a video/audio download and deluxe double disc set. All extra content including a bonus studio EP is available to fans who support the project throughPledgeMusic, and those fans will also receive the film & live album weeks before the public street date. As singer/bassist Kelly Ogden puts it, “There are a lot of fans who might never get out to a Dollyrots show in the flesh so we did our best to bring the experience to them. The only things missing are the ringing ears and sweaty hugs… but other than that we nailed it!”
The Dollyrots plan to release Family Vacation just before embarking on a 3 week tour of the United Kingdom with BFS next February. Since forming in 2002 the band has amassed a tour history of roughly 1,000 shows and released a debut on Lookout! Records along with two albums on Joan Jett’s Blackheart Records. The band decided to go completely independent for their last few releases through their own Arrested Youth Records, including 2014’s Barefoot And Pregnant which enjoyed a #7 debut on Billboard’s Heatseekers Chart. The band is currently based in both Los Angeles and their native Florida, splitting time between both while juggling the responsibilities of parenthood and music.
The birth of River in late 2013 has resulted in The Dollyrots bringing their baby on the road for all tours since, making for a true “family band” experience. It’s this mixture of raw rock band and new parent dynamic which propels Family Vacation forward, making for a concert experience punk rockers, moms, dads, and even their kids can watch and relate to. Because just because you grow up doesn’t mean you have to stop being awesome.
