In the three years since their acclaimed debut, Metal Moon, Dirty Ghosts lead singer and guitaristAllyson Baker has stayed busy lending her guitar playing talents to albums by Aesop Rock, !!!, and Kelley Stoltz, while taking her own band on several North American tours. Following up on a live 45 released by Third Man Records, Baker and crew hunkered down to record the newest Dirty Ghosts album Let It Pretend with Trans Am’s Phil Manley in San Francisco.
Set to be released in fall 2015 on Last Gang Records, Let It Pretend is full of clever hooks, heavy beats and intricate post-punk guitar work. With nods to the synth-punk sounds of Devo, the Screamers and Chrome, the angular tension of Wire and Gang of Four and the refined song craft of XTC and The Pretenders – the result is a lyrically deep and musically energetic sound. This time around Baker is joined by bandmates Tony Sevener (Honeycut, Tommy Guerrero) on drums and Erin McDermott (AC/DShe, Deadly Weapons) on bass. Tightly crafted tunes like ‘Cataract,’ ‘Light Like Speed’ and the album’s soaring title track shine live, thanks to a tense, frenetic energy that’s constantly pierced by Baker’s unconventional guitar work. Their new EP Cataract will be released on Burger Records with full length to follow.
